Alfie tipped his watering can over the beans. Out came a lovely sprinkle. Under the spout went Pudding. Drip, drip, drip on her pink nose! Alfie moved the can. Pudding moved too. The beans waited politely. Then they drooped a little.

"The beans need their drink," Alfie told her. He led Pudding to the barn and gave her a cozy patch of straw. Back he went to the beans. Behind him came patter, patter, patter. Pudding popped under the can. Drip!

Alfie watered the beans at last, then carried the harvested carrots to the rinse tub. Swish went one carrot. Splash went Pudding! Water slopped over the rim. Alfie stared at her soggy neckerchief. "Are you trying to be a carrot?" he asked.

Pudding scrambled out and trotted to her wallow. Alfie followed. Where there should have been soft, cool mud, there was a hard, cracked crust. Pudding poked it with her snout. Bonk. "Oh," said Alfie. "Your muddy bath has gone crunchy!"

Alfie fetched his watering can. He poured. Pudding stamped. He poured again. She stamped again. Squish, squash, glorious splosh! Pudding sank into the soft mud with a blissful grunt. Alfie brought her a clean carrot. Crunch! Her ears gave a happy wiggle.

Then Pudding climbed out, walked straight to Alfie, and rested her muddy chin on his clean knee. Alfie looked at the knee. Pudding looked at Alfie. "Pudding, please!" he said. But he sat down beside her anyway. Squish.
