The Place Beneath the Apples

Every autumn, Garnet and Vesper ate lunch beneath the old apple tree. Garnet brought a basket big enough for six. Vesper brought one tiny jar of cinnamon. They always sat where two roots rose from the ground like seats waiting for them.

The night before their picnic, a storm crossed the hill. By morning, the tree lay on its side, its roots lifted into the air. Apples rolled through the wet grass. Garnet stood beside the trunk. Vesper landed on a broken branch.

Garnet pushed at the trunk. His feet sank deep, but the roots would not settle. Vesper whispered a growing charm over the snapped branches. One leaf stirred, then fell. "I thought I could help," she said. Garnet stepped back. "Me too."

Garnet wanted to clear the path at once. Vesper could not bear to see the branches moved. "If you carry it away," she said, "where will we sit?" Garnet looked at the two roots, still holding the shape of their old places.

"Not today," Garnet said. He set down his basket and sat in the grass. Vesper rested beside him. For a while they watched a sparrow hop through the fallen apples. Then Vesper told the tree about the picnic they had planned.

She remembered the year Garnet had packed twelve pears by mistake. Garnet remembered Vesper's cinnamon drifting into his nose until he sneezed crumbs across the hill. They laughed, then grew quiet again. "I miss our place," he said. "I do too," said Vesper.

The next morning, Garnet returned with a saw. He cut the sound wood into long, heavy pieces and carried them beneath the shed roof. He left the roots until Vesper was ready. "This part can hold us," he told her, touching a plank.

Vesper gathered the apples that had not split. Inside one, she found dark seeds. She kept a few in a small pot by her window through the cold months, watering the soil when it dried. Garnet came often to check beside her.

One morning, a green point broke the soil. Vesper called Garnet over. He leaned so close his breath stirred the dirt. "Sorry," he whispered, and pulled back. Together they chose a sunny spot on the hill, close enough to see the old roots.

In spring, Garnet set a bench beside the young tree. He had shaped it from the old trunk, leaving a knot they both remembered beneath one hand. Vesper planted the seedling nearby. They ate their first picnic there, with plenty of space for its branches.
