A red shape drifted past Sula's nose. It wobbled without swimming. Sula followed it around her shell bed and under a rock. "A very flat fish," she said. Cove the crab held up his uneven claws. "A tiny sail! Where's its boat?"

Another shape came twirling down, with five pointy tips. "A starfish practicing a dance?" Sula guessed. "A little hand waving hello," said Cove. He waved back with both claws. More shapes floated overhead, and the two friends followed their slow, spinning trail upward.

One shape brushed Sula's cheek. It felt thin as a whisper. Another caught on Cove's shell and made him look like a captain wearing a crooked hat. "Perhaps they're pieces of sunset," said Sula. "Then let's see where sunset keeps its pieces!" cried Cove.

They broke the surface beneath a tree leaning over the cove. Its branches rustled in the cool air. Leaves the color of pumpkins and ripe apples let go, one by one, and sailed onto the water. Sula blinked. "The sea hasn't grown a forest!"

"No," said Cove, lifting his leaf hat. "A forest has come to visit the sea." A leaf landed on the water with the tiniest plip. Below, its shadow swayed over Sula's shell bed. She stayed to watch the last leaves settle beside it, quiet as bedtime.
