The Very Long Woof

A birthday parcel sat beside Doodle’s cushion. Grandma Dog was coming to open it with him. But the paper had such interesting corners! Doodle sniffed one. He sang to another. "Can you hear me in there?" The parcel did not answer.

Doodle sat on his own paws. That stopped one paw from touching the parcel. The other paw wiggled. "Grandma, where are you?" he asked the door. Waiting felt bigger than the whole room. His tail bumped the cushion. Bump! An idea.

Doodle dragged over another cushion. One for Grandma, one for him. He put a flower in a cup between them. Then he practiced a welcome song. It began with "Hello!" and ended with a woof so long he ran out of breath.

At last, the door opened. "I heard a woof from the gate!" said Grandma Dog. Doodle leaped onto his cushion, then hers, then his again. "That was my welcome song!" he said. Grandma sniffed the flower. "And this is my royal cup?"

Doodle laughed. "It’s for your flower!" Then he spotted the parcel. "Oh! Our present!" Grandma sat beside him. Together they pulled the paper open. Inside was a book. Doodle turned the first page; Grandma read the first word. His tail went bump, bump, bump against her cushion.
