The Moon Pebble Blanket

Momo's first sleepover began with two pillows and a great deal of wiggling. Bram tucked in his mouse friend. Momo rolled left. Momo rolled right. "My pillow doesn't smell like home," Momo whispered. Bram set his smooth white moon pebble beside his own pillow.

Momo watched the pebble shine in the window light. "May I hold it?" Momo asked. Bram curled his paw around it. He had never slept without it. Momo pulled the blanket up to his nose. Bram opened his paw. "Just for tonight," he said.

Momo held the pebble close. At last, his whiskers stopped twitching. Bram lay down. His paw felt oddly empty. He counted his toes: one, two, three, four, five. Then he counted them again. One, two, three, four, five. Still five. What a very stubborn answer.

From the other pillow came a tiny squeak. Then another: squeak, squeak. Bram lifted his head. Momo was asleep, snoring through his little nose. Bram smiled into the dark. He pulled the blanket over his empty paw and listened until his own eyes closed.

In the morning, Momo put the pebble back in Bram's paw. A tiny leaf was folded around it. "It needed a blanket," Momo said. Bram held up the leaf. "It fits," he said. He tucked the pebble by his pillow and saved the little blanket beside it.
