Dottie Doorbellcrumb and the Cloud Bakery
Page 2
Dottie tiptoed into the Cloud Bakery and smelled warm bread, sweet as sunrise. Far off, thunder drums rumbled in the ceiling clouds. On the silver trays, rainbow rolls lay flat and sad, their colors drooping like sleepy ribbons.

Nia brushed flour from her sleeves and nodded toward the warm oven nook. "The Vanilla Wind can’t reach the dough, Dottie. A sticky sugar gate shut tight in the middle shelf passage." Puff drifted close, his cinnamon swirl twinkling. "That’s why the rolls are still sleepy."

Dottie and Puff hurried into the sugar hallway, where the walls glistened like frosted cake. The air was sweet and sticky, and Dottie’s worry grew in her chest like a tiny storm cloud. Puff whispered, "Easy now. We’ll float through together."

At the moon-sugar shelves, jars glittered like little moons, softly humming in the blue glow. Dottie spotted Mira Moonwhisk, calm as bedtime. "What seems stuck, little helper?" Dottie took a breath and said, "We need help, please."

Mira Moonwhisk smiled and lifted her crescent whisk. "Good. First, we ask kindly. Then we help gently." She handed Dottie a cool whisk and a tiny cup of moon-sugar water. Puff bobbed beside them, bright as a lantern cloud.

Together, they dabbed moon-sugar water along the sticky gate. Nia steadied the shelf with careful hands. Puff gave a tiny, breezy puff, and the gate began to loosen with a sweet crackle. Far away, the thunder drums rolled softly, like a sleepy giant turning in dream.

With a soft pop, the sticky gate swung open. The Vanilla Wind rushed through at last, warm and fragrant, like custard, flowers, and sunshine. The rainbow rolls began to swell and lift, round cheeks blooming on the trays. Dottie laughed, worry gone as light as steam.

In the ovens, the rainbow rolls bloomed like tiny colorful clouds. Their tops shimmered pink, blue, and gold. A happy bell chimed in the warm air, and sweet steam curled up to tickle the ceiling clouds. "They’re rising!"

Dottie clapped her floury hands and smiled up at the glowing bakery. "I asked for help before my worry spilled over." Nia nodded, Puff spun a tiny cinnamon loop, and Mira’s moon-whisk sparkled. Then the whole Cloud Bakery shone brighter than ever.
