Bracken Packs a Day
Page 2
On the first day of woodland school, Bracken painted a beetle, learned a hopping game, and laughed when Teacher Owl sneezed a feather onto the ceiling. At home time, the little bear opened a bag. "I want to take today with me!"

In went a red leaf from the hopping game. In went three smooth pebbles from counting. In went the paintbrush, the bell, and the feather. The bag bulged. Bracken tugged its strings. The bell rang. "School isn't over!" cried Bracken.

Teacher Owl came to see. "The bell stays here," she said. Bracken pulled it out. The paintbrush came too, dripping blue spots onto the pebbles. Then the feather tickled Bracken's nose. AH-CHOO! The leaf flew up and stuck to Teacher Owl's head.

"A fine hat," said Teacher Owl. Bracken giggled, then held up the empty bag. "But how will I keep today?" Teacher Owl pointed to Bracken's blue-spotted paw. "Tell me what happened, and tap a spot for each part." Bracken tapped and told.

Tap: the beetle painting. Tap: the hopping game. Tap: Teacher Owl's feather sneeze! Bracken laughed so hard the last blue spot landed on the ground. "And tomorrow?" asked Bracken. "Tomorrow," said Teacher Owl, "we find out what painted that tiny door in the tree."

Bracken left the bell, the brush, and the mysterious door for tomorrow. The leaf and pebbles stayed where they belonged, too. All the way home, Bracken tapped a clean paw and told the stories again. Then came a grin. "Tomorrow has a door!"
