The Echo That Sneezed

In the empty train shed, Tangerine stood on one track and Cobalt on the parallel one. Tangerine was short, round, and orange. Cobalt was tall, square, and navy. "I wish my little whistle had a grand echo," said Tangerine. "Just once."

Tangerine gave a hopeful peep. From farther down the shed came a splendid PEEEEE! Tangerine nearly bounced on those big wheels. "Again!" Another peep brought another glorious blast. On the next try, the echo went PEEEEE—AH-CHOO! "Echoes don't sneeze," Tangerine said.

Tangerine could not leave the track, so Tangerine investigated from it. A peep toward the roof brought nothing. A peep toward the doors brought nothing. A peep toward Cobalt brought a hurried, badly disguised PEEEEE! Cobalt's flat roof trembled with a stifled giggle.

"Aha!" said Tangerine. "You've been my echo." Cobalt's pale-blue face looked sheepish. "Your peep sounded so small," Cobalt said. "I wanted you to hear something grand." Tangerine thought about that. Then the little engine gave one more peep, just for Cobalt, who answered magnificently.

"Now it's your turn," said Tangerine. Cobalt drew a deep breath and let loose a mighty whistle that shook dust from the rafters. Across the two tracks came the tiniest possible reply: "pip." Cobalt stared, then burst into a delighted laugh. "Was that my echo?"
