Miso and Bim's Lantern Picnic

Page 2

On Halloween evening, Miso tied on her leaf cape over her teal neckerchief. She packed two muffins and a little pumpkin lantern. Bim arrived with his golden-yellow scarf tucked neatly under his wings. "A lantern picnic!" said Miso. "We only need somewhere to sit."

Miso found a log beneath a low branch. "A seat for two!" she said. Bim perched beside her. The log wobbled gently. Miso's muffin slid toward Bim; Bim's muffin slid toward Miso. "They want to trade," said Bim. "Polite muffins," said Miso.

Miso settled the muffins back in the basket. Just then, the branch brushed one ear. Tick! It brushed the other. Tickle! Miso ducked, but her leaf cape stuck up like a little tent. "This seat has too many jokes," she said. "Let's try yours."

Bim showed Miso a branch he liked. "I hang here," he said, swinging upside down. Miso reached up with both paws, then let them drop. She stayed safely on the ground. "My paws say no thank you. But your scarf looks very fancy that way!"

"Then I'll try sitting," said Bim. He folded his wings and perched on the log. One moment later, he tipped himself upside down from its end, his ears nearly touching the grass. "I sat," he said. "For almost a whole blink." Miso laughed.

They looked together for a place that suited both of them. Miso checked below each branch. Bim checked above it. Behind a hedge, they found an apple tree sheltered from the breeze, with broad roots at its feet and a branch just overhead.

Miso curled on a root. Bim hung from the branch. Neither muffin wandered; neither ear got tickled. "Wait," said Miso. "Where does the lantern go?" Bim pointed between them. Together, they tied its handle to a small branch, where its friendly glow reached them both.

They ate their muffins under the pumpkin lantern. A fallen leaf landed on Bim's scarf. "Now you have a cape," said Miso. Bim turned his head to admire it upside down. The leaf fell onto Miso's nose. "And now you have dessert," he said.

At home, Miso folded her leaf cape beside her bed. Bim hung from his favorite perch near the window, with his scarf folded close. "Same tree next picnic?" he asked. "Same muffins," murmured Miso. Bim smiled. Miso tucked in her paws, and soft purrs filled the room.
