Ellory and the Thunder Game
Page 2
Rain tapped the window. Tap, tap, tap. The sound was gentle and steady, like fingers saying hello. Then came the thunder. BOOM! The child woke up. The room felt dark and big.

But there, on the pillow, sat Ellory. Dusty-blue and patient, with one ear patched soft yellow. Ellory's stitched eyes looked calm. "Hello," Ellory seemed to say. "I am here."

The rain fell harder. Patter, patter, patter. Then quiet. In that quiet moment, Ellory leaned close. "Let's play," Ellory whispered. "Between the thunder, we find soft things. Three soft things. Are you ready?"
Page 5
The child nodded. "First," said Ellory, "find something soft you can touch." The child's hand reached out. The blanket. Soft and warm. "Yes," said Ellory. "That is one."

Rain pattered. Pattered. Pattered. Then quiet again. "Second," said Ellory. "Find something soft you can see." The child looked. Ellory's floppy ears. The stuffed animal's trunk, curved and gentle.

"That is two," said Ellory softly. The child felt safer now. Warmer. The game was working like a spell.
Page 8
The thunder came again, but quieter this time. BOOM... then far away. And then the quiet returned. "Third," whispered Ellory. "Find something soft inside you. Something calm." The child breathed in. Breathed out.

"That is three," said Ellory. "You found them all." The child held Ellory close. The little elephant's body was soft and worn and perfect.

The rain still fell, but gently now. Softer and softer. Patter. Patter. Ellory's stitched star foot peeked out from under the blanket.

The child's eyes grew heavy. Ellory stayed right there, patient and still. The thunder had moved far away. Only the gentle tapping remained, like a lullaby.

Soon the child was dreaming. And Ellory, dusty-blue and faithful, dreamed too. Outside, the rain whispered. Soft. Safe. Home.
