Rollo and the Missing Constellations

At the moon base, Captain Luma pointed to the glowing star map. Three constellations had faded away. I noticed the room was very still. "Can you find them, Rollo?" she asked. Quill hummed beside me, and I said, "First, I’ll look for clues."

I followed the cold air to the observatory window. There, on the glass, were pale frosty swirls, curled like tiny comet tails. That was strange. Quill rolled closer and shone a blue light across the marks. The swirls pointed toward the east hatch.

We went through the east hatch and crossed the gray plain. I noticed the moon dust was puffed up in three little spirals. Then Quill paused. "Scan complete!" A low hum rose from a nearby crater, and the ground gave a soft, musical tremble beneath my boots. That was our next clue.

We followed the hum back to the observatory. I noticed a silver trail on the floor, like spilled stardust. Quill beeped and sniff-scanned the air. "Comet dust detected!" On the telescope lens, tiny sparkles clung in a perfect arc. That was strange. Somebody had brushed past in a hurry.

I studied the sparkles on the lens and the three spiral prints in the dust. They matched the missing constellations, not a theft trail. Quill spun in place. "Scanning... hidden nearby!" I pointed to the dark skylane above the crater. Someone had been practicing there, quietly and close by.

Then three shy little comets floated from behind the observatory dish. Their tails glimmered pale gold, peach, and mint. I noticed they were trembling. "We did not mean to hide them," one whispered. "We were practicing our first sky dance."

Page 8

I looked at their wobbly tails and the bright map on Quill's visor. That was the trick. The constellations were not gone at all. They had been hidden by the comets' dancing light. "We can help," I said. Quill projected the star map onto the floor, safe and shining.

The baby comets took a tiny breath and twirled in the dark. Their pale gold, peach, and mint trails curved like ribbons across the ceiling. I watched closely. One by one, the three missing constellations glowed back into place on the map. Quill beeped, "Perfect alignment!"

Captain Luma arrived in the dome and smiled at the glowing ceiling. "You found the answer gently and wisely. Thank you, Rollo and Quill." The baby comets bowed, then danced again, and the moon base shimmered like a quiet little galaxy.
