Bertie's Basin Lake

On Bertie's birthday, cold drizzle plinked into the swimming pond. Too chilly for a swim! Bertie dragged a washbasin beneath a fir tree. Rain filled it to the brim. "My own lake," Bertie said, dipping in one paw. "Visitors welcome!"

Rabbit arrived with two enormous flippers. "For racing!" Rabbit said. One flipper filled half the lake. Squirrel came wearing a leaf as a sun hat. "Where's the sunshine?" Squirrel asked. "Under the tree," said Bertie. "It's being shy."

Hedgehog brought an umbrella twice as wide as the basin. "For shade!" Hedgehog said. It caught a drip, tipped, and poured a waterfall onto Rabbit's flipper. SPLASH! The flipper slapped the water. Bertie's paw got soaked. So did everybody's noses.

"That's a very splashy lake," said Squirrel. Bertie grinned. "It's my birthday. Let's make it splashier!" Rabbit paddled with the flipper. Squirrel sailed a leaf boat. Hedgehog held the umbrella upside down to catch raindrops, then tipped in one enormous plop.

The drizzle stopped. Sun warmed the big pond. Rabbit tucked the flipper under one arm. "Race you there?" Bertie looked at the little lake. Squirrel's boat was circling Hedgehog's upside-down umbrella. "One more lap here," said Bertie. Everyone stayed. SPLASH! "Another!"
